At night, insects use the moon to help them fly straight. If the moon reaches one of their eyes before the other, it could mean something dangerous - like they are flying towards the ground or into an object. So they like to have the light of the moon hitting both eyes evenly as they are flying. Also, they are not smart enough to tell the difference between a light and the moon. Since the light is so close, they are constantly correcting their flight to keep the light hitting both eyes at the same time. This draws them closer and closer to the light, which they do not realize is so close because they think it is the distant moon.

Mike, that sounds looney to me but, it makes a lot of sense. That Old Devil Moon sure does its razzle dazzle.
