School Situation
I am really not happy with Shayna's public school. I had high hopes and it is much worse then my expectations. The only good points are SIP (gifted/talented) and a few specials (and even they are pretty lame). Its really a waste of time. :-(
So...since I do not want to home school, what I have decided to TRY is to try and get her into a good private school via either a scholarship or financial aid. So far- have looked into one very good one, and they do have financial aid and have heard through the grapevine they have "endowments." Which if I were Lemony Snicket, would mean "lots of donations from rich families and corporations."
of course, this would be for NEXT fall 2006. The application and financial aid process must be done one year before...SO:
For now we will just wing it out in her current school and I will continue to attempt to do my own enrichment (I have some supplies like an ancient history book, what every 3rd grader should know book, subscription to natl. geographic for kids and plan to get her a more advanced math book and hopefully book on Latin which she wants to learn).
It does not matter if you live in the "better" school districts...I have spoken to people who live in a few of the better "top" districts and its exactly the same there. In fact, maybe worse because since more people want to live there the districts are even more crowded. Bottom line: public school teaches to the MIDDLE student. Therefore, its TOO EASY for the bright kids, TOO HARD for the slower kids (although I think the special ed kids get more from the public schools then the gifted kids).
Its so depressing and so NOT FAIR. I really do not want Bensalem School District to get a single cent of my tax money.
Its now almost mid october and they have not even started thier science unit!!! I wanted to scream on parent night, it was so pathetic.
