Thanksgiving Day: Brunch
On Thanksgiving we wanted a change of scenery (and an escape from the overpriced hotel breakfast) so we went into the next town North of Fort Lauderdale, Lauderdale by the Sea. Just based on what the desk clerk told me the night before, to go to "Aruba Cafe" for breakfast. When we got there we found a set up that reminded me of a cross between Carmel, CA and New Hope. Well just a small quaint seaside town with a Christmasy looking square leading to the beach (like in Carmel- one of my all time favorite towns in the world). Aruba Cafe on the beach didn't open until 11am and didn't do breakfast but instead we found a really cute cafe right next to it called the Village Grille. It turned out that the food there was delicious and more then half the cost at the hotel- and they had the best breakfast potatoes we have EVER had. and the icing on the cake: we had a perfect view of the TV showing the Macy's NYC Thanksgiving Parade. Just before we left the restaurant, we saw santa arrive at the end of the parade and crowd of people who gathered to watch applauded and cheered.
Shayna and skyler shared no less then 3 chocolate milks: I moved the crayons so they would not be in the way but Skyler didn't want them moved, so he went to grab them - without removing the straw from his mouth - and moved them back- all while still drinking the chocolate milk.
After brunch, we wanted to check out the beach and fishing pier, so we walked down to the beach, curious as to why there was a small crowd gathering near the water (photo was taken later, so no crowd):
It turns out there were these BIG fish (Manny says they were Tuna and Mahi) chasing little fish, and the little fish were washing up on the beach. Shayna grabbed one, it was a ballyhoo (see photo above right). She held it by its swordtip and after looking at it and showing us she threw it back into the ocean. here is Shayna holding the fish- a girl came over to look:
We started to head towards the fishing pier, and then I realized, it was the spot where they filmed 2 scenes in the movie "Hoot*." The Coffee Shop on the pier is where they filmed 2 scenes with Luke Wilson as the cop meeting with his supervisor.
*Hoot is a great movie that takes place in Florida- based on the book by Carl Hiassen, directed by Will Shriner and produced by the legendary Jimmy Buffet (who is in the movie as well and is a god in the Keys). I highly recommend seeing it- also great for kids.
